Man putting golf tees into a Centurion Map by Rota Golf

The Genesis of Rota Golf: Beyond a Golf Map, It’s Golf Art

In my previous blog post, I delved into the origins of my passion for golf and recounted some remarkable experiences I've had on the course. Reflecting on the inception of Rota Golf, there's no elaborate backstory. Simply put, I wanted this product for myself, and I found that the market lacked offerings meeting my standards of quality.

Recalling my visits to the Top 100 Public Golf Courses across the United States and beyond, I always made a point of buying merchandise from the pro shop as a keepsake of the experience. Let's face it, all golfers do it. Despite shelling out thousands on greens fees, the experience somehow feels incomplete without returning home with a hat, polo, quarter zip, ball marker, headcover, and a golf towel. I've admittedly been guilty of showing up at my club sporting a Pebble Beach hat, a Whistling Straits Polo, an St. Andrews quarter zip, and a plethora of ball markers from top-tier courses. Yes, at times, I've been "that guy."

However, over time, a predicament emerged. My hats developed sweat marks and sun damage, my polos and quarter zips no longer fit, I misplaced my cherished golf towels regularly, and my ball markers seemed to vanish from my pocket almost monthly. These once-pricey pieces of memorabilia became unwearable, lost on some obscure golf course, never to be recovered. And, of course, reordering merchandise from those courses was out of the question, as items must be purchased on-site, right?

Another challenge arose within my household: my wife perpetually struggled to find suitable gifts for me on holidays and special occasions. Having already acquired every conceivable golf accessory, I was stumped as to what else I could possibly want. Golfers, it seems, possess an insane impulse to acquire merchandise and mementos from every course and store they encounter. Each birthday, my family would ask, "What would you like for your special day?" to which I'd reply that I'd already purchased the new wedge or that a cool new headcover was already en route. This cycle persisted until my wife and I decided to take matters into our own hands.

Thus began my quest to find a means of documenting my travels to premier golf destinations across the country. I stumbled upon inexpensive canvas push-pin maps online, none of which seemed to have been conceived by a golfer. While various products, such as ball and tee holders, were available, I sought something of superior quality. I envisioned a product that would serve as a statement piece in my home office or "man cave." The concept of a travel map was hardly revolutionary but given the thousands of dollars I'd invested in golf experiences over three decades, I refused to settle for a cheap rendition.

Determined to bring my vision to fruition, I sought out a local woodworker. Together, we sourced wood from a nearby wholesaler, developed a custom AutoCAD program for the CNC cutting machine, and experimented with various engraving techniques until we achieved the perfect map. One distinctive feature we envisioned for this product was the ability to use golf tees to mark each course completed. Crafting precise holes for 100 different locations, some of which were in close proximity, proved to be a formidable challenge for the product designer, but we persevered.

Now, our product vision has evolved into a tangible prototype, complete with staining, sealing, and framing. As any golfer would following a round at a premier golf course, I eagerly shared news of my custom wooden map with everyone in my circle. The response from friends, family, and fellow club members was overwhelmingly positive. Initially, we hadn't entertained the idea of establishing a business, but witnessing the enthusiastic reception to our product's development spurred us into action. The vision resonated deeply with avid golfers, as there existed no satisfactory means of showcasing our golfing adventures, particularly among high-end enthusiasts eager to regale others with tales of their golfing adventures at the local 19th hole.

Upon further reflection, I realized that every glance at the map evoked a multitude of emotions. Firstly, it prompted fond recollections of the countless enjoyable rounds I'd played across the country with friends and family. Each tee placed on the map represented a cherished memory, rendering them invaluable. Secondly, it ignited a sense of anticipation for future rounds at courses I had yet to visit. Rather than merely creating a map, I was compiling the golfer's ultimate bucket list in a premium format unprecedented in the market. Lastly, we recognized that a Rota Golf map would make an exceptional gift for the golfer accustomed to purchasing everything for themselves.

My wife and I aspire to establish a brand that celebrates the game of golf through a unique piece of golf art. Our goal is to foster a community of like-minded golfers who traverse the globe in pursuit of this great game, engaging with one another and exchanging tales of their travels. After all, a product is more than just an object; it's intertwined with meaning. The essence of our product lies in commemorating the incredible moments on the golf course, both past and future.

Stay tuned for future blog posts where we delve deeper into the intricacies of our product, recount our experiences at the nation's top golf courses, and much more.
